Importance of Mentoring
It is August and almost time to go back to school. I just finished my summer class and I am waiting to get my official acceptance letter to Clemson University this week. After I get my acceptance letter, I have to register for classes and get a bunch of stuff done before classes start on August 19th. Thinking about everything I have to get done before classes start is overwhelming. I will also be taking all my classes online this semester, which will be challenge. Thankfully I can put my trust in knowing that God has a plan and everything will work itself out. Praying and trusting God is all I can do during this time of uncertainty.
Anyways, I wanted to share a message with y'all that has been on my heart the past few weeks. Over the course of the summer God has revealed to me what a mentor really is and made me realize the importance of being a mentor to younger generations.
Let me start with the definition of a mentor:
Dictionary.com describes a mentor as, "a wise and trusted counselor or teacher."
In Psalm 71:15-18 , the psalmist was telling everyone of all the great things God has done. Then, specifically in verse 18, the psalmist talks about wanting to declare God's power to the next generation. It is important that we do the same.
We are responsible for sharing God's goodness and greatness with younger generations.
In the past, I have looked up to older girls that go to my church, but I never really had a mentor until this summer. Like I said in my last blog post, I joined an online small group and we meet on zoom every week to study the bible. Below is a picture from one of our small group zoom meetings. Over the past month, my small group leader has taken me under her wing and become a spiritual mentor in my life. Through her actions and words she has shown me that a mentor is so much more than just a wise and trusted counselor.
What does a spiritual mentor look like?
- Someone who is constantly leading you back to God.
- Someone who can be vulnerable at times.
- They encourage you during difficult times and pray for you.
- They model Christ in the way they live.
- This person gives you godly advice.
- They are understanding and a good listener.
- This person cares about you and wants what is best for you. They want you to seek God and grow in a relationship with him.
My small group leader has shown me what a spiritual mentor actually is and has inspired me to be a spiritual mentor to younger girls.
When we share God's faithfulness, younger girls will want to trust God, to live boldly, and refuse to waste any days of life.
The past year I have been a small group leader for the middle school aged girls at my church, but I want to be more than just a girl who leads small group once a week. I want to be a mentor in these girls lives. I want to show younger girls what God has done in my life and what he can do in their lives.
God can even use our struggles to help others. In 2 Corinthians 1:3-4, it says God comforts us so that we can comfort those going through difficult times with the comfort we receive from God. Younger girls look up to older girls and us older girls need to model Christ in our lives. We need to be that positive and godly influence in their lives. I pray for everyone reading this blog post that God will place a spiritual mentor your life and that you will be a spiritual mentor in someone else's life.
